Pleas from A Hedgehog
Grant me easy access to your garden,
Fences and walls are a burden.
Hedges allow an easier passage,
Somewhere to sleep...
Safe from dogs' jaws and lawnmowers.
Beetles and worms I can snuffle for
But dudes, leave the rotten fruit,
The occasional bird egg
Where they fall to the floor.
I've a delicate tum so no dairy, nor bread.
Meaty pet food is the modern wheeze
Allowing me to roam for several miles with ease,
Wading knee deep in the sharp gravels,
Scurrying across cold slabs on my travels,
Outrunning vehicles - when in our prime
Only to find your slug pellets and nettings
That may end our earthly time.
My serious words are my pleas to be heard
As our numbers have dwindled by almost two-thirds.
